Angiogenesis is a complex biological phenomenon that enables the formation of new blood vessels starting from the pre-existing ones.

Under physiological conditions, angiogenesis plays a fundamental role during embryonic development and post-natal growth of the organism. In the adult, it is mostly quiescent, except during wound healing, muscular exercise and menstrual cycle.
On the contrary, angiogenesis is reactivated and plays a crucial role in a wide spectrum of pathologies, such as cancer, neovascular pathologies of the eye, arteriosclerosis, obesity, rheumatoid arthritis, pulmonary hypertension. It has been estimated that at least one third of the world population is affected by angiogenesis-related pathologies.
